Author Showcase- Claire C. Riley

Please welcome Claire C. Riley to the blog today! Claire recently published the novel Limerence and it is available for purchase on Amazon (See Link page for links). Let’s get to know a little about Claire.

claire1)Tell us about yourself.

My name is Claire C Riley, and I live in the UK with my husband and three young daughters, and one scruffy dog! I love reading (obviously!) writing (obviously!) ha ha, watching movies and listening to music, but most of my days are taken up with daydreaming about new plots and looking after my daughters.

2)What do you do when you are not writing? Day job?

Well, I’m mainly a mummy to my little girls. They are eight, six and twenty months. I also work part time in an office.

3) How did you choose the genre you write in?

I write in mixed genres, mainly because I read pretty much anything. Horror, paranormal romance, dystopian, chic-lit, thriller. A great writer friend of mine once told me to never close my mind to any genre or style of writing and in the end it would make me an even better writer. I hope that she’s right ;0)

Limerence- my debut novel is a genre mix of romance, paranormal, thriller and psychological horror, with a few sexy parts just for kicks ha ha.

4) When did you start writing?

I have always loved to write from being a young girl, but when my daughters came along it took a back step.

5) Biggest influences as a reader/writer?

Reading mixed styles and genres of books.

6) Is anything in your writing based on real life experiences or purely all imagination? Where do your ideas come from?

Ha ha, totally pure imagination… and probably a little bit of wishful thinking ha ha.

In 2010 I read an article which had the word Limerence in it. For some reason I just couldn’t get the word out of my head and slowly an idea started forming. However, it wasn’t until last September that I seriously got down to work and wrote Limerence properly.

 7) Planner or Panster?

Both, ha ha. Some scenes I plan out for days, others I totally write off the cuff. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but I think you have to write in the best way for yourself, and you can’t force what isn’t there.

8) What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

I was told that it was a bad idea to write in first person, especially first person present tense as it was so difficult to write and many people wouldn’t get it. The reader was reading a very rough first draft and said they liked it, but wanted it in third. I spent over a week changing it to third, but when I read it back I hated it and had to change it all back! One reader called it an ‘UNBELIEVABLE BOOK’ (in capitals too) I was pretty damn happy with that one.

9) Tell us about your book (s). Favorite thing? Hardest issue to overcome?

I love Limerence, it’s like my fourth baby, and just like any baby it’s hard going. We’ve had our up’s and downs. The tense issue was a major thing for me, and so was writing from multiple perspectives, as done badly, present tense is horrendous, but in my heart I knew that it had to be write this way.

My favorite thing would be that I leave the reader totally confused as to who to like and who to hate. Because you’re in each characters head, you know that you should dislike someone, but then you get to see the situation from their view and can see where they are coming from. (I hope) By the end though, the reader knows the truth.

10) Advice for aspiring writers?

Read EVERYTHING. Read every style of writing- even ones you have previously dismissed. If you love romance, try a thriller. If you love horror, try erotica. Mix everything up, and you will find your niche, your style.

And go with your gut.

11) Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?

I just hope that you all enjoy Limerence. As I said, it’s my baby, and I’ve worked really hard to make an enjoyable book and to convey the right emotions from each character and situation.

Thank you so much for taking the time to purchase and read Limerence, it really is appreciated. I always appreciate feedback, and you are always welcome to post pictures and things up on my Facebook wall, or contact me on my website. I’ve had poems and fan art, and I love to receive it all.
